First off, write a business plan! Plan, plan, plan, you can’t possibly plan enough. Then get financing. You can’t have too much of this, either, but be careful what you spend it on. Make sure you have a budget, and stick to it! Also, make sure nobody gets into the cashbox! You should be the only one handling the finances, though your accountant can keep track of them for you.

I find it very hard to believe no one has answered this question yet. I took a course on this years ago so I have an idea, but maybe not the specifics anymore, so if someone else chimes in that would be good.
!. What business you want to start?
2. Why? What is your interest and knowledge in this field? Have you worked in this area before? What is your expertise that they should trust you with accomplishing your goals?
3. Where? Is there a market for your product or service?
4. How much would it cost to get going? ie. rent, utilities, renovating, insurance, employees, office supplies, inventory, equipment. Anything and everything you can think of and the cost of it.
5. Projected income. How much do you think you can make? ie.If you sell this much product or service you will make this much profit minus expenses.
This is a rough list, so you need to check into it more specifically. If you are a do-it-your-selfer there are many how to books on this subject that will help you immensely.
Have fun!!
