Can successful writers be considered entrepreneurs?

Posted by admin on April 29th, 2011 and filed under successful entrepreneurs | 1 Comment »

Lets say you’re a freelance writer with a writing business or a successful writer like J.K Rowling with the HP series. Do you think they can be considered entrepreneurs?

Writing "business"?

Writer’s aren’t usually considered entrepreneurs in the informal sense because that implies a business with a more direct exchange of goods or services for money.

Writer’s are "talent" – the publishing house founder might be an entrepreneur.
Exception: if JK Rowling is directly involved with the Harry Potter product line, movies, posters etc. she would then be considered an entrepreneur.

What fee I need to pay to university if I am in UK on dependent Visa of Tier 1 entrepreneur?

What fee I need to pay to university if I am in UK on dependent Visa of Tier 1 entrepreneur? Will I be consider as overseas/international student or as a local student?

If you are on a visa with a limit- i.e if there’s a date on your visa saying it’s valid till . . . . then you will pay international fees even though you have been here for more than three years.

If you hold a passport from outside the EU, in order to get home fee status you need
1. settled status, which means indefinite leave to remain in the UK, i.e. not limit on how long you can be here
2. in addition to the above you need to have been here for at least three years

From what you are saying you will be asked to pay overseas fees. But remember Universities are independent bodies, they can charge as they wish they only get guidance from the government but do not necessarily have to follow it. I know an overseas student who managed to plead with the university because of mitigating circumstances ended up paying home fees.
Ask your university, they usually have automatic scholarships for internationals, and other generous scholarships depending on the degree. I know off the top of my head herriot watt, greenwich, king’s college and plenty others offers some sort of scholarship to entice internationals to go there.

Is a degree in accounting a good one in preparation for being an entrepreneur?

I want to be an innovative entrepreneur, but first I need money, stability, and I have to pay off my student loans. I think that accounting would be the best for this, but will a deep understanding of accounting help out with entrepreneurship?

If you seek a course in accounting it will only specialize in the filed of accountancy. I suggest that you seek a course specializing in entrepreneurship where you will learn accountancy, how to be more innovative and also other important elements of entrepreneurship like the use of technology, marketing and so on.

Discuss the value of the entrepreneur. What distinguishes an entrepreneur from the labor resource? Why are entrepreneurs unique?

Entrepreneurs should think BIG PICTURE by habit:
Entrepreneurs think and process materials by continually asking What effect would my decision on how "x-item" is handled by "y-worker" make on the end product?
How much money does it cost "G-industry" to manufacture this product and how can I improve this process and ultimately the Quality of "x-item"?

Would a man be embarrassed to win the best women entrepreneur in business?

Posted by admin on April 18th, 2011 and filed under women entrepreneurs | 9 Comments »

I am looking at some funding for women to set up in business from a UK city, The best business award is also open to men [ i am not sure if the funding is] I wondered if a man would feel strange if he won the best Entrepreneur women business title.
BTW I would be glad for him if he did.
The award was open to men.
I am not sure of the funding , I might not be entitled to funding myself as a semi non UK resident.
They might not like my buisnesss either lol
I think in this current economic climate all funding should be pooled and open to both sexes.
I was surprised that a council actually two were targeting women’s business.I thought they would be accused of being sexist.

I don’t understand the premise.

Why wouldn’t it just be "best entrepreneur in business" if it includes men?

Would you feel comfortable with "Best Man Entrepreneur in Business"?

THESE ARE SOME PROBLEMS –

The study was planned with the following objectives:

To portray a profile of women entrepreneurs and their enterprises in the small scale sector;
To explore gender differences in entrepreneurial characteristics;
To identify problems unique to women in setting up and running their enterprises;
To document existing policies, programmes, institutional networks and the involvement of support agencies in promoting women’s entrepreneurship.

Methodology

An extensive literature review of secondary data sources was undertaken as relevant to the

stated objectives of the study.

In order to fill in secondary data gaps on topics such as employment, investment and sectorwise distribution of women entrepreneurs, raw data was obtained from 14 States from the Offices of the Development Commissioner (SSI), Government of India. To supplement data obtained from secondary sources, a few case studies were obtained and incorporated in the report.

This study has been conducted within a short time frame. Thus the scope of the study is limited. Since secondary sources of data were relied upon it was difficult to maintain uniformity in sample size for comparative analyses of various aspects related to women entrepreneurs. Also, qualitative analysis has been used in the main, to arrive at conclusions rather than rigorous statistical analyses.

The truth is probably the best answer.

But – passion for the product/service would be a good start. Also motivation and determination to succeed or to make a difference – from an inspirational figure perhaps.
