job title for hi tech start up entrepreneur ?

Posted by admin on January 26th, 2010 and filed under entrepreneur network | 1 Comment »

I am starting up a collaboration based hi tech company. as of right now i am still building the website and am not actively seeking customers. i started going to some networking/entrepreneur meetings and have gotten to a point where i want to get some cards made up so that people i meet will have my company name, website, email, etc. I am in a bit of a dilemma regarding what job title i should give myself on the business cards. I obviously don’t want to give myself something that sounds over gratifying (ceo, president, founder, etc), but i don’t want to put a title on that would take me out of consideration for a conversation by someone of decent business stature. I’ve considered the idea of no title as well, but am really not sure. What do you think?
in regard to the response that points out that i haven’t provided much detail (thx for pointing that out):

it is a hi tech startup that provides access to Internet available workstations, web conferencing, a demonstration/elearning management area, hosted documents/presentations,/media, and an assessment/quiz builder. I am currently my only employee. My experience is all on the internet engineering side, though i am obviously going to have to run my business, develop at least my first couple of client relationships, take out the garbage, and everything else.

thx again for your comments

You don’t say a lot about what you or the company actually do, so it is hard to be to precise, but a couple of ideas…

Director of… for example ‘Director of Technical Services’

Manager… for example ‘Sales Manager’

Owner/Operator… this is signal that you are small business, but not necessarily a bad thing.

Just a few suggestions to get you going. Good luck.

I am looking for books that cover silicon valley, startups, tech companies, enterepreneurs. Especially those about the personalities involved. People like Steve Jobs, Andy Grove (I already read Only the Paranoid…), etc. If you have a suggestion about a book about entrepreneurs outside of silicon valley, then please tell me that too. Thank you for your time!

Here is a paperback about the Internet entrepreneurs, people like Bob Davis of Lycos, Jerry Yang of Yahoo and others: http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0273649213/ref=sib_dp_pt/105-6392336-4195646#reader-link

who are the famous and successful entrepreneurs and what are their stories?

give their names and the years they become entrepreneurs

Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani, known as Dhirubhai, was born on 28 December 1932, at Chorwad, Junagadh in the state of Gujarat, India, into a Modh family of very moderate means. When he was 16 years old, he moved to Aden,Yemen and worked there as a gas-station attendant, and as a clerk in an oil company. Ten years later, he returned to India and started a business (Reliance) with a capital of Rs. 15000.00 (US$ 375).

Over time his business has diversified into a core specialisation in petrochemicals with additional interests in telecommunications, information technology, energy, power, retail, textiles, infrastructure services, capital markets, and logistics. The company as a whole was described by the BBC[1] as "a business empire with an estimated annual turnover of $12bn, and an 85,000-strong workforce".

Dhirubhai Ambani was named the Indian Entrepreneur of the 20th Century by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). A poll conducted by The Times of India in 2000 voted him "greatest creator of wealth in the century".

What is required to for a middle class young entrepreneur to get success in business?

Posted by admin on January 26th, 2010 and filed under entrepreneur | 3 Comments »

I am a 30 year old new entrepreneur and have just started a trade consultancy business and needs little brainstorming to keep a positive mindset for success.Pl.guide me with your suggestions.

Don’t give up. Always keep in mind why you started your business in the first place. If the reasons aren’t motivating you, find new ones that will. Give it all you’ve got one day at a time.
Concentrate on pleasing your customers and not focus on making money. Over deliver.
You might want to consider building a website for your business.
Not only will your practice grow, but you can earn additional income streams from having your own website.

Women Entrepreneurs?

Would you invest in one if you thought that she and her idea made sense and had potential?

(if you could take the risk of new business of course..)
Konnie M I used money I saved this year and I made (very small!) investments in 2 small busineses started by American women and also helped with the work with them. I have to say that it is risky.

profit motive trumps all "isms".

(send me your business plan, and we’ll talk).

Where can I find business start-up grants for young entrepreneurs?

Posted by admin on January 26th, 2010 and filed under young entrepreneurs | 1 Comment »

I would like to start my own business but loans seem like kind of a hassle considering that I am under 18 so are there any good, legitimate places that would give me grants? Websites? Phone numbers (preferably in Texas)?

It is hard to find grants to start a business — even for young entrepreneurs.

Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for starting a for-profit business.

One possible exception is for companies developing or exporting agricultural goods, including food and forest product. Another exception could be the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) or Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs http://www.sba.gov/aboutsba/sbaprograms/sbir/index.html , which fund the research and development of technological innovation that meets specific government needs.

Your best bet actually will be from the states if they offer grant programs for women (or any other special interest groups — minorities, women, disabled, veterans, etc). Or check with non profit organizations, particularly women organizations if they offer grants. Examples include

Iowa Women’s Foundation http://www.iawf.org/
New Mexico Women’s Foundation http://www.nmwf.org/guidelines.html

Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website http://www.sba.gov/mostrequesteditems/CON_FAQ2.html

"The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See http://www.sba.gov/financing for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments."

Nonetheless, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov – these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture.

Here is a listing of federal grants for small businesses. See if there is any available for individuals for starting a business — THERE’S NONE.
http://12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/CATALOG.BROWSE_BENEF_RPT.show

Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT – Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women’s Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women’s business center that will train women entrepreneurs

What is the one most important common characteristics of successful entrepreneurs?

Posted by admin on January 26th, 2010 and filed under successful entrepreneurs | 6 Comments »

If you had one question to ask to get to that quality, what would it be?

The one question I would ask is this: "Do you use your time effectively?"

Successful entrepreneurs use their various resources in an intelligent and optimal manner. Out of all the resources Time is the most precious resource which is irreplaceable. So use your time effectively.

Use this example: If A and B are two numbers, only one of the following relationships between them is true:

1] A is less than B (A < B)

2] A equals B (A = B) and

3] A is greater than B (A > B).

Now think of A as your business efforts in terms of the usage of your Time and B as your business rewards per month or per year.

Obviously A < B is the best option, that is get your required results with less efforts.

Concentrate on Time Management.
